RM of Coalfields’s story
The Rural Municipality of Coalfields No. 4 was incorporated as a rural municipality on January 1, 1913. It lies in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan, right up against the American border, where it neighbours Burke County, North Dakota.
Within its boundaries are the town of Bienfait and the villages of Frobisher, North Portal and Roche Percee, along with the unincorporated communities of Deborah, Hirsch, Pinto and Taylorton. The RM's office is in Bienfait.
The Souris River is the only major river in the municipality, running from Roche Percée in the west across to the neighbouring RM of Enniskillen No. 3 in the east. Along the river, downstream and east of the village of Roche Percee, sits the Roche Percee Recreation Site, a provincial campground with 13 campsites and three picnic areas, reached from Highway 39.
